2019 Dance Residencies

"Résidanses 2019" is an incubation programme for choreographic projects aimed at providing support to emerging African choreographers as they develop their creative process. It allows artists and companies to take part in residencies to develop a new work or further develop a work in progress with the aid of a mentor.

"Supported projects will be taken into special consideration by the curators programming the Biennale de la danse en Afrique 2020."

Who can apply?

Any emerging contemporary and urban dance choreographer or company that is based on the African continent and wants to develop a new work or finish a work in progress.

- Integrate mentoring* by an African artist to the project
- Provide evidence of previous artistic works
- Be released from any other professional activities during the entire period
of the residency

Residencies must last a maximum of 6 weeks.
These will take place in Africa (minimum duration of 3 weeks), with the option,

* Mentors are established African artists able to offer a venue where selected choreographers can live and Work

Further support may subsequently be awarded to the mentor depending on how the project develops, in order to fund a period of residency in France in connection with a specific partner (such as a CCN or CDCN)

All eligible applications will be examined, under the responsibility of the Artistics Development and Cooperation Department), by an evaluation committee set up by the Institut français in collaboration with the artistic committee of the Biennale de la danse en Afrique .
The commission has absolute authority. It reserves the right to turn down any project without having to justify its decision. Its decisions are final.

Selection Criteria

During the evaluation of the applications, attention will be paid to the artistic quality and relevance of the project, to its ability to contribute to the artistic development of the choreographer/company, to the ability of the project leader to complete the project and to draw up a realistic budget.
