Background

In 2015 The Forgotten Angle Theatre Collaborative (FATC) establishes a new rurally based Dance Centre in Emakhazeni, Mpumalanga. The Centre is poised to become a vital, unique and vibrant hub within the South African and international dance landscape. Funded through the NAC Flagship program and RMB with additional support from Nedbank Arts and Culture Trust and Gooderson Leisure’s Kloppenheim Country Estate, FATC will be offering exciting 4 week residency opportunities to 10 South African Dance practitioners.

The ethos driving the development of the Dance Centre echoes the pay-off line of the province in which it will be based, that being: “Mpumalanga - A Pioneering Spirit”. Through its 20-year history FATC has been recognized for its artistic and professional excellence and for the pioneering of socially responsible work.  It continues this pioneering spirit in conceiving of the establishment of the rural Dance Centre in Mpumalanga.

The province of Mpumalanga, which means ‘place of the rising sun’ has some of the greatest historic, scenic and wildlife diversity in South Africa. It’s many San Rock Art paintings indicate that it has long been a space in which people have interacted with the environment to open the window into human experience. As the meeting point of many cultures including the Swazi, Ndebele and Shangane people it has also always been a space of connection that leads to a rich cultural diversity. The Dance Centre seeks to draw on the province’s history of connection and a rich cultural heritage in making it a space of new connections, networks and enrichment both socially and economically. FATC is a registered Public Benefit Organisation
