2019 Dance Residencies

"Résidanses 2019" is an incubation programme for choreographic projects aimed at providing support to emerging African choreographers as they develop their creative process. It allows artists and companies to take part in residencies to develop a new work or further develop a work in progress with the aid of a mentor.

 "Supported projects will be taken into special consideration by the curators programming the Biennale de la danse en Afrique 2020."

 

Who can apply?

Any emerging contemporary and urban dance choreographer or company that is based on the African continent and wants to develop a new work or finish a work in progress.
Each candidate may only apply with one creative residency project.

 

Eligibility Criteria

In order to be eligible to apply, candidates must:
- Be citizens of an African country and based in Africa
- Be an early career choreographer or a company whose work is not yet
widely-known on an international level
- Apply individually or as a company
- Develop a new work and/or a further stage of a work in progress
- Integrate mentoring* by an African artist to the project
- Provide evidence of previous artistic works
- Be released from any other professional activities during the entire period
of the residency
Duration and Locations of the Residency:
Residencies must last a maximum of 6 weeks.
These will take place in Africa (minimum duration of 3 weeks), with the option,
thereafter, for the work to be continued in France or in another country, depending
on the development of the project.
* Mentors are established African artists able to offer a venue where selected choreographers can live and Work

 

Conditions for the Residency

- Residencies must take place in 2019.
- Candidates are responsible for organising their residency and getting in touch with tutors and partner.
- The tutors/ partners will provide the technical, human and logistical resources necessary for creating the work
- A financial contribution of between €5000 and €10,000 will be allocated to the mentor depending on the country/ies the candidate is travelling to and on the evaluation of the project by the selection committee. Further support may subsequently be awarded to the mentor depending on how the project develops, in order to fund a period of residency in France in connection with a specific partner (such as a CCN or CDCN)
- The financial contribution may not cover more than 50% of the total cost of the project.
- Candidates must have a passport valid for at least 6 months

- As a second step of the project, a €1000 grant could be awarded directly to the successful candidate to fund the structuring of the project and his/her professional meetings in France and abroad

 

Selection Process

Evaluation Committee

All eligible applications will be examined, under the responsibility of the Artistics Development and Cooperation Department), by an evaluation committee set up by the Institut français in collaboration with the artistic committee of the Biennale de la danse en Afrique .
The commission has absolute authority. It reserves the right to turn down any project without having to justify its decision. Its decisions are final.

 

Selection Criteria

During the evaluation of the applications, attention will be paid to the artistic quality and relevance of the project, to its ability to contribute to the artistic development of the choreographer/company, to the ability of the project leader to complete the project and to draw up a realistic budget.

The commission will also look at the nature of the partnerships that could be established with institutions in France/Europe, as a second step, after the residency.

 

Application Procedure

The registration and application procedures may only be carried out via IFPROG, the Institut français' internet platform. Candidates are invited to fill out the application form on the platform and to upload the requisite supporting documents for the application.

The following items must be included in each application (files should be in pdf format):

- Project outline (maximum 2 pages);
- The projected budget for the residency (including revenue and costs, and highlighting any grants that have already been obtained or are being applied for from other partners) ;
- 1 detailed CV and a short biography;
- 1 recent passport photo (portrait);
- 2 letters of recommendation (maximum) by qualified individuals, dated from 2018, signed by hand;
- The written agreements of the tutor (and if any, a written agreement from a French or European
Partner, not compulsory)
- 1 PDF file compiling previous and current works and artistic creations;
- Active URL links to download video files if relevant;
- 1 dated and signed sworn statement, certifying:
• The exactness of the information provided,
• And that the candidate has read the programme's General Terms and Conditions and agrees to them.

 

Schedule

- Deadline for submissions for the 2019 residencies: 31 October at midnight
- Publication of the results on the Institut français website in mid-November 2018
