So Chef! Southern Africa (12-24 Oct. 2015)

Following the success of last year’s first edition, the So Chef! project is coming back to Southern Africa. Three top Chefs from France and Belgium will travel to South Africa and Lesotho to create gastronomic masterpieces along with top South African Chefs in six cities: Bloemfontein, Cape Town, Durban, Johannesburg, Maseru and Pretoria.

So Chef! - co-organised by the French Institute of South Africa together with the Alliance Française network - takes place as part of the National Nutrition Week of the SA Department of Basic Education.

So Chef! offers a varied programme and worthwhile experiences for foodies and people of all ages, with workshops organised in schools and universities, workshops in the Alliance Française network and partnering cooking schools, four-handed gastronomic dinners (two Chefs prepare one menu) in partnering restaurants as well as a culinary photo competition on social media.

Last year, the project gathered 750 guests for the six four-handed and six-handed dinners scheduled in five restaurants around the country; about 400 pupils aged 8 to 18 from 10 schools took part in 40 taste lessons; 200 culinary students learnt French know-how and techniques at five different culinary schools in five cities and 350 people attended the 17 workshops carried out in Alliances Françaises and partner institutions countrywide.

 

So Chef! is brought to you by the French Institute of South Africa (IFAS) and the Délégation Générale de l’Alliance Française en Afrique Australe (DGAF) in partnership with the network of Alliance Française in South Africa and Lesotho, Atout France and the South African Department of Basic Education.

Lessons

Organised in schools and universities, Lessons are specially created for pupils and students to discover and rediscover tastes and learn to make easy, simple and balanced dishes in collaboration with French and local chefs.

Four-Handed Gastronomic Dinners

Two chefs, one menu… A French chef and South African chef will bring their culinary creativity together in creating gastronomic dinner experiences.

Workshops

For those who like to get creative and get their hands dirty in the kitchen, Workshops will be organised with Chefs, in the Alliances Françaises participating or in partnering cooking schools. The workshops will be followed by a cocktail and meal.
