"Idubukele", an exhibition by Bongumenzi Ngobese

When? From 12 March to 26 November. Where? All around Southern Africa. Durban based visual artist Bongumenzi Ngobese presents his new exhibition "Idubukele", inspired by his trip to Paris last year. The South African visual artist spent three months at the Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris, from February to April 2011, as part of the 2010 ABSA L’Atelier Gerard Sekoto Award. During his residency, the artist explored the city and its cultural scene and spent time with other artists. The work created by Ngobese during his artistic residency in Paris will be showcased this year within the French cultural network of Alliances Françaises and French Cultural Centres in Southern Africa, as part of a tour.

The exhibition features works that investigate cultural identity. During the creative process, Ngobese looked at daily cultural activities being implemented and regulated by black people in the city scape. In this regard he explored his experience of being a Zulu male, negotiating a place to live in the urban context. He made use of traditional motifs from his heritage as a referent point to his identity in combination with mundane objects he found in the environment.

Ngobese explains “The appropriation of found objects in my work acts as a catalyst which enables me to understand my current position in the urban context. A found object invokes important meaning and possibilities to me metaphorically. It speaks about history, location and identity that which I become part of or exist in between. This correlation is crucial in my work as it enables a person to comprehend his or her relation to the physical environment, also allowing one to be clear of whom he or she is becoming as the world we live in changes so rapidly.”
