The sixteenth annual BASA awards ceremony was held on Monday 26 August at the Johannesburg City Hall.

The Award features twelve categories in the following mediums: visual arts, dance, theatre, physical performance, music, architecture, fashion; design and all forms of creativity are recognised, as well as three categories awarded by the Chairman of BASA, Kwanele Gumbi, and judging panel as follow: Diplomacy in the Arts, Art Champion Award and the Chairman’s Premier Award.

This year, the prize for Diplomacy in the Arts was awarded to the Embassy of France in South Africa for the reciprocal programme of the France-South Africa Seasons 2012 & 2013. This prize is given in recognition of Foreign Missions which contribute to the development and preservation of the arts in South Africa as well as the continued prioritisation of cultural diplomacy between South Africa and the international community.

Mr Olivier Brochenin, chargé d’Affaires at the Embassy of France in South Africa, says: “The Embassy of France feels honoured to have been awarded this year and thanks all the organisers for paying a tribute to the mutual cooperation between South African and French institutions which made this amazing programme possible. Our ambition through our cultural diplomacy is not only to strengthen the relationship between our two countries but also to promote our conception of cultural exchange, cultural diversity and support to the arts, since the creation of our Ministry of Culture in France in 1959. Through the Seasons, we have highlighted the founding principles that we share with South Africa: support the artists, make sure that the arts are accessible to everyone, protect our heritage. The Seasons were not only a programme of festivities in arts and culture, but also allowed us to promote partnerships in other fields like science and research, economics and business and even sport!

The aim of the Seasons is to improve mutual understanding and to contribute towards the diversification of France’s image in South Africa and South Africa’s image in France by emphasizing the modernity and values that the two countries share. South Africa is the first sub-Saharan country to partake.

Last year South Africa successfully hosted the French leg of the Seasons between July and November 2012, this year the South African leg of the Seasons is running between May and December.

The South Africa-France Seasons 2012 & 2013 featured hundreds of exhibitions, performances, academic events and festivities throughout both countries involving more than 2,000 artists and professionals.

Making the Seasons possible are the governments of South Africa and France, the Institut Français and the National Arts Council of South Africa as well as many other institutions, companies and individuals.

The Awards, jointly sponsored by Business Day, Business and Arts South Africa and supported by Anglo American, recognise and encourage excellence and innovation in the field of business support for the arts.
