Book Launch: "Les Sud-Africains" by Valérie Hirsch

5 March Alliance Française of Pretoria
11 March Alliance Française of Johannesburg

BF - Les Sud-Africains

The Alliance française of Pretoria and Johannesburg will welcome Belgian freelance journalist Valerie Hirsch for a discussion around the launch of her book.

Valérie Hirsch,
based in Johannesburg since 1996, explores the evolution of racial identities since 1994 in her book “Les Sud-Africains” (The South Africans), published in February in Paris (Ateliers Henry Dougier).

The book tackles also the issues of social and economic inequalities, the roots of the criminal violence and the relationships with the rest of the continent. Each chapter is introduced by a leading interview (Jonathan Jansen, Steven Friedman, Kopano Ratele and Stanley Subramoney).

Some well-known South Africans – the writer Niq Mhlongo, the comedian Joey Rasdien, the businessman Herman Mashaba, the public protector Thuli Madonsela or the founder of Stoned Cherrie, Nkensani Nkosi – feature in the book, which includes also stories on the transformation of Ansteys building in Johannesburg city bowl, the emerging black farmers, the gangs in Manenberg and the life of West African migrants in Yeoville, among others.
