French cinema hit "The Artist" wins 5 Oscars

"The Artist", a silent film produced in black-and-white, has become Hollywood's favourite this season. On Sunday 26th February, this French comedy-drama directed by Michel Hazanavicius was awarded 5 Oscars by the American Academy of Cinema. Starring French actor Jean Dujardin (awarded as best male actor) as George Valentin and Bérénice Bejo as Peppy Miller, the movie takes place in Hollywood between 1927 and 1932. The plot focuses on a declining film star (George Valentin) and a rising dancer and actress (Peppy Miller), as silent cinema falls out of fashion and is replaced by talking pictures. Inspired by the true love story between the now completely forgotten male star John Gilbert and Greta "The Queen" Garbo, the movie is a tribute to the founding fathers of cinema, as well as a moving tale of two crossing fates.

Previous awards

"The Artist" has received wide praise from critics across the globe and premiered at the 2011 Cannes Film Festival where lead actor Jean Dujardin won the Best Actor Award. Since then, the film has been nominated for six Golden Globes, the most of any film from 2011, and won three: Best Motion Picture (Musical or Comedy), Best Original Score, and Best Actor (Comedy). In January 2012 the film was nominated for twelve British Academy Film Awards (BAFTAs) of which it won seven, including Best Film, Best Actor for Jean Dujardin and Best Original Screenplay for Hazanavicius. It then triumphed at the 84th Academy Awards (Oscars) ceremony, for which it had received 10 nominations and finally won five, including the prestigious Best Picture, Best Director and Best Actor.
