French film expert to lead script workshop in Durban

Miguel Machalski, a top French film script consultant, will be in Durban from 14th May to work on the latest film in development from the Durban based company Vuleka Productions, with director Madoda Ncayiyana and producer Julie Frederikse. The aim of this workshop, hosted by the Alliance Française, is to help the team of the award-winning feature film, Izulu Lami (My Secret Sky), to develop the script of its follow-up film, Muti Dot Mobi

Miguel Machalski is a Paris-based “script doctor” who is known for his support for World Cinema in Latin America, Asia and Africa, as well as his understanding of mainstream films. He worked on Clint Eastwood’s Oscar-winning Million Dollar Baby, the Iranian foreign language Oscar winner A Separation, and Best British Independent Film Award winner Billy Elliott.

Machalski’s script consultancy work is supported by the municipality of Nantes, as well as the "3 Continents Film Festival" based in this French city which is twinned with Durban’s eThekwini municipality. This cooperation between Nantes and Durban highlights the two cities’ relationship around filmmaking.

Frederikse and Ncayiyana developed their first feature film at Produire au Sud (“Producing with the South”), held annually in Nantes. Izulu Lami was also awarded production support by the French film fund, Fonds Images Afrique, and the translation of the script into French was done by Alliance Francaise. The film won six international Best Feature Film awards

About Muti Dot Mobi : “This movie is about a kid with a dream who’s lured by a con man with a plan,” said producer and co-writer Frederikse. “The tricks the characters do on stage in the movie happen on cellphones and the internet, and Muti Dot Mobi showcases a new face of urban Durban, whose residents are poor but tech-savvy.” Vuleka Productions aims to promote their new film it through mobile and internet, as well as conventional media marketing.

As part of the 2013 "Crossed Season South Africa/France", led by NAC/Institut Français, the "3 Continents Festival" 2013 edition will host a "South African Cinema Focus" composed of some 12 to 15 films. It will also organize a one-week residence for three South African directors in Nantes during the Produire au Sud workshop, with support from the NAC.
