In recent years, South African animation industry has been developing fast and getting recognition worldwide. Through various operations, South African animation industry has seen its relationship with France strengthening through exchanges, cooperation and partnerships.

For the first time this year, the Annecy International Animated Film Festival (10-15 June) hosted a South African pavilion under Animation SA and NFVF banner. Over 30 delegates attended the number 1 animation festival and market in the world to showcase South African talent. This delegation was organised as part of the South African Season in France. For the first time also, South Africa was represented in the festival official competition with Khumba, the second feature animation film produced by Triggerfish studio just released last week in South Africa.

The strong presence of South African in Annecy 2013 is a true reflection of the SA animation industry development and global exposure. It is also a result of its strengthening links with the French industry. The second leg of the annual SA/France exchanges, which started with a bang at Annecy 2013, will see the visit of nine French producers, studios and key players in the French animation scene from 4 to 8 November in Johannesburg and Cape Town.

The objective of the French delegation visit is to conduct business discussions and explore possible cooperation for potential co-productions and production services contracts with South African studios/producers. This is a follow-up of discussions initiated at Annecy 2013 and during last year French participation to Kunjanimation festival. As a platform for South Africa/France partnership in animation, Kunjanimation 2103 together with Animation SA is partnering with the French Institute of South Africa –IFAS- for some French animation screenings and the French animation delegation program. It will include one on one meetings, business breakfasts, workshops, visits of schools and studios, as well as participation to DISCOP – Africa’s Premier TV Content Industry Gathering – from 6 to 8 November.
