With more than 4 million residents, Johannesburg is one of the most cosmopolitan African cities welcoming communities from around the world including African francophone communities. The African French-speaking diaspora is mainly represented by peoples from Congo, Cameroon, Ivory Coast, Senegal, Burkina Faso, Mali and Guinea. The project is a platform for the French-speaking communities which aims to promote the integration of the diaspora as well as dialogue within the South African society.

The 30 minute show will be broadcasted every Tuesday between 19.30 and 20.00 and podcasted online at www.vowfm.co.za. It will be produced by the African French-speaking community and will propose a variety of local reportsand cultural news, short feature programmes from RFIas well as African francophone music.

Frédéric Chambon, Regional Head of Media, Film & Music at the French Embassy/French Institute in South Africa, says “Our support to Rendez-vous Africa is part of our actions to promote French-speaking cultures, the French language as well as French broadcast mediasuch as RFI. Three RFI ‘s programmes will be part of the radio show: Les Mots de l’Actualité, La Chronique de Mamane and Le Journal des Sports Afrique”.

For Marc Gbaffou, President of the African Diaspora Forum (ADF), the idea is to show the positive side of immigration, and help to change the image of migrants that prevails in the media – either seen as victims or as criminals :"We will show through Rendez-vous Africa the cultural, intellectual and social wealth of the communities. We also want to show that migrants are people like everyone else, with dreams, aspirations and concerns very similar to those of South Africans. "

Mike Smurthwaite, Director of Voice of Wits (VOW FM), emphasizes on the inclusion of various communities in the radio show programmes: "Johannesburg is a real melting pot of cultures, many are from countries other than South Africa. Voice of Wits wants to reach and involve communities living in Johannesburg and specifically around Braamfontein where the radio is based. It seemed logical to offer this platform, to promote social cohesion and cultural education. We are proud to partner with the ADF and the French Institute of South Africa in what we hope will be a long term project. "
