The Angolan Afropop musician Hélder Mendes and his 5-piece band are on tour for the first time through Southern Africa in May 2013, with the support of Alliance Française in Southern Africa, the Franco-Namibian Cultural Centre and the French Institute of South Africa.
Much influenced by musicians such as Waldemar Bastos, Felipe Mukenga, Baab Maal, Youssou Ndour, Angelique Kidjo and Salif Keita, Hélder Mendes mixes genres and sings in Portuguese as well as in various vernacular languages. Hailing from the province Kwanza Norte and having grown up in Luanda, this talented young singer, songwriter already released two albums, “Okwaba Africa” (“African Beauty”, 2006) and “Vumbi” (“Spirit”, 2010), recorded in Spain and featuring international musicians.
Apart from Angola, Hélder Mendes has performed in Spain, Belgium and France.
