French bands to take part in the Oppikoppi Odyssey 2014

7-9 August 2014 - Northam

Every year, on the second weekend of August, thousands of people flock to the farm to camp out in the bush and enjoy the music. For its 20th anniversary, Oppikoppi is cooking a special edition, with a line-up made up of South African bands and international acts, including French bands Inspector Cluzo on the one hand, and The Wrestler, The Slut and The Dealer on the other.

Two-piece band Inspector Cluzo, that rocked the Ramfest in 2013, are back in South Africa as part of their summer international tour.
Since 2008, their explosive live rock and funk music took them around the world, performing more than 600 concerts in more than 35 countries.
If you wonder what a jam between Rage Against the Machine and the Jackson 5 or between AC/DC and Curtis Mayfield would sound like, this is a show not to be missed.
Their 4th album, Gasconha Rocks was released in 2013.

More energy will be brought to the festival, with The Wrestler, The Slut and The Dealer, performing in South Africa for the very first time.
Their eclectic music made of unexpected mixes, bootlegs and videos, blows away the boundaries between old rock stuff and heavy electronic bangers, from techno to metal, punk, dubstep, electro and psychedelic Rock.
Their new EP, Death Race, will be released by the fall of 2014.

Since the France-South Africa Seasons 2012 & 2013, new bridges have been linking the French and South African music industries. In October 2013, l'Institut Français, MaMA Festival and Bureau Export organised the first Music Focus dedicated to popular music as part of MaMA's 4th edition in Paris. The invitation of music professionals from various countries, supported by the French cultural network abroad, included a number of South African musicians and professionals such as the Oppikoppi team that subsequently invited French band The Wrestler, The Slut and The Dealer at this year's Oppikoppi Odyssey.

Following the success of the 2013 Music Focus programme, new crossed collaborations will see more South African music professionals and artists taking part in MaMA's 5th edition in October 2014, including Duncan Ringrose (Cape Town World Music Festival / SshadoworksS), Damon Forbes (Sheer Sound) and Nakhane Touré (Just Music), who won the 2014 SAMA Award for Best Alternative Album.

Earlier this year, the French Institute of South Africa invited François Vasseur, in charge of the programming at MaMA, to meet with various local artists and representatives of the SA music industry, which resulted in the invitation of South African artist Nakhane Touré to perform at the 2014 edition.
