Toyi Toyi at Dance Umbrella Festival 2016 | 3-4 March

 

The Dance Umbrella Festival has just announced the launch of their 28th edition in Newtown, Johannesburg which will run from February 25th to March 6th. We at the French Institute of South Africa have proudly been supporting Dance Umbrella for the past 16 years. This year  we're excited to present Toyi Toyi a collaborative choreographic piece by the dancers of the French Hors Série and Via Katlehong Companies.

 

Toyi Toyi will be performing at the Dance Factory on the 3rd and 4th March 2016 at 7pm.

 

French choreographer Hamid Ben Mahi and the dancers of the Via Katlehong company met in 2013 during Urban Ballets, an itinerant parades project supported by the cultural programme of the European Union. Following this encounter, the South African dancers invited Hamid Ben Mahi to join them in a co-production of which the theme draws from the personal experiences of Vusi, Steven et Buru, the founding members of Via Katlehong Co.

"*Toyi-toyi is a dance of protestation that accompanies the protest songs that sprung up from the streets. It lends a supplementary strength to the freedom chants. It comprises jumping and chanting."

 

As in other works of the Hors Série Co., Toyi Toyi combines dance, theatre and the spoken word, and uses anecdotes from real life, in a simple sharing of stories. Hamid Ben Mahi offers the opportunity of free speech to the performers. The message is enriched by the personal experiences of the dancers and offers the possibility of opening the dialogue.
