Tartuffe - National Arts Festival Grahamstown

2017-tartuffe-facebook-JHB

Tartuffe at the National Arts Festival in Grahamstown!

After an acclaimed tour in Soweto, Cape Town, Durban and Johannesburg, Tartuffe is now at the National Arts Festival! The multi awarded theatre director Sylvaine Strike and the Fortune Cookie Theatre Company are touring South Africa since early April with Molière's chef d'oeuvre.

NAF PROGRAM:

- "Tartuffe, the play", from the 29th of June to the 1st of July

- "Tartuffe, a historical controversy", the 30th of June at 4pm

- "The making of Molière in Africa", the 1st of July at 3pm

Exploring the way in which people are easily manipulated by symbols of power and honeyed words, Tartuffe is one of the French Shakespeare's most famous work. A brilliant 100% South African cast will give life to Molière's goofy characters.

Promoting the work of Molière is even more relevant today as it remains utterly universal through the ongoing power of his word. IFAS and the Alliance Française are proud to showcase the genius of one of France's most accomplished and universal artist, whose masterpiece Tartuffe will be played within a context never seen before and promises a lot of surprises...

"When Sylvaine Strike brought Molière's The Miser to the Market Theatre a few years ago, I fell in love with her work, her interpretation and direction. Seeing Strike's production of Molière's Tartuffe at the Soweto Theatre recently, I once again experienced the same admiration for this young South African director and her team, their production of Tartuffe is just brilliant" Lore Watterson, Creative Feel, June 2017

"A heady mix of irreverence, theatricality placed in a set simple in its magnificence, that is ramped up all the way and features contrivance pushed to the giddy hilt, Tartuffe is a tightly focused, beautifully choreographed tribute to Molière, which indulges in such an array of over-the-top shenanigans, you become embroiled in the madness and don't want it to end" Robyn Sassen

"The play will leave you in stitches and the script could teach local rappers a thing or two about rhyming. The local director and cast do a splendid job bringing this 1664 theatre piece to life" Sowetan Live, 2 June 2017

"Sylvaine Strike and her extraordinary cast have made such magic with this production that I am filled up with how wonderful, mad, exciting and inspiring, not to mention completely hilarious, brilliant theatre can be." Megan Furniss, WeekendSpecial, 23 April 2017

"It's always surprising when a play written in 1664 is just as relevant today as it was then. Brilliantly directed by Sylvaine Strike, Molière's Tartuffe is just that. It's at once charming and chilling, with physical theatre so subtly incorporated that, by the end, you feel like the human condition is light on its feet." Briony Chisholm, What's On In Cape Town, 24 April 2017

This event is brought to you in association with the French Institute of South Africa (IFAS) and the Alliance Française in South Africa, and with the support of Total South AfricaBNP Paribas & RCS (a BNP Paribas group company) and Mazars.
