About Crossings
Initiated in 2010, Crossings was an original idea developed by French choreographer Michel Kelemenis, following his residency for artistic creation with Moving into Dance Mophatong in February and March 2009. Inspired by the place – four institutions dedicated to dance gathered in the Newtown Cultural Precinct (Dance Forum, Dance Factory, Moving into Dance Mophatong and Vuyani Dance Theatre) – and his own artistic experience, he thought of Crossings as a training workshop for international and South African choreographers, dancers, composers and lighting designers, with a view to giving them the time and the space to explore the relationship between dance, music and lighting design.

The first edition of the international workshop Crossings took place in Newtown (Johannesburg) from Monday 26 July to Sunday 8 August 2010. With more than 110 applications from all over the world, the first edition was a great success on different levels: for the team of facilitators that was put together specifically for the purpose of Crossings, for all the participants who benefited from the training and for the audience who enjoyed the open sessions and the final performances.
