MONGEZI NCAPHAYI: Solo Exhibition South African Tour

After debuting his first solo exhibition Spirit's Response in February at the ABSA Art Gallery, South African artist Mongezi Ncaphayi is continuing his tour in Southern Africa through the Alliance Française Network.  This exhibition is the latest since returning from his three-month residency last year in Paris, at the Cite Internationale des Arts. His residency was part of his L'Atelier prize that he received in 2013 when he won the Gerard Sekoto award which is sponsored by ABSA Bank, the South African National Association for the Visual Arts (SANAVA), the Alliance Française and the French Institute of South African. Ncaphayi's exhibition is entitled Spirit's Response and is inspired by his love of music and visual arts, reflecting the people and situations he has come across.

The exhibitions will take place in the Alliance Française in the follwing cities:

Port Elizabeth: 20 April - 13 May
Cape Town: 2-28 June
Pretoria: 8 September - 6 October
Durban: 17 October - 6 November

Ncaphayi was born in 1983 and holds a National Diploma in Arts & Design (2005) from Ekurhuleni East College Arts School, a Professional Printmaking Certificate (2008) from Artist Proof Studio and a Certificate in Advanced Studies (2012) from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, USA.

Aside from the Barclays L'Atelier Gerard Sekoto Award, he has previously been awarded a scholarship from Linda Givon of the Goodman Gallery (2011); a fellowship to the Ampersand Foundation (2011); first prize in the Decision 2012 printmaking juried show at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston (2012) and a grant from the Prince Claus Fund (2015).

As part of his Barclays L'Atelier prize, Ncaphayi is given the opportunity to host a travelling exhibition through the Alliance Francaise network comprising the South African National Association for the Visual Arts (SANAVA), Alliance Francaise and the French Institute in South Africa. Spirit's Response debuts at the Absa Gallery in February 2016 before moving on to Port Elizabeth in April.

Barclays L'Atelier is one of Africa's most prestigious art competitions. It rewards young visual artists aged 21 to 35 with the opportunity to develop their talents abroad. A look through the list of previous winners will testify to this. Building on the platform created in 2015, the competition is continuing to expand across Africa, opening in a number of countries, where Barclays has a presence. Artists who are permanent residents of and residing in either South Africa, Botswana, Zambia, Ghana, Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Egypt, Mauritius or Seychelles are invited to enter.

The Barclays L'Atelier art competition is run in conjunction with their partner, the South African National Association for the Visual Arts (SANAVA).
