Dessus-Dessous is a collaborative workshop between light and sound artist Chia-Wen Tsai and Wits students. Chia-Wen Tsai, brought out from France by the French Institute of South Africa, will in collaboration with the Wits School of the Arts and the School of Architecture and Planning be presenting some of her past work and the outcomes of her current workshop with Wits architecture and music students from 11 to 20 April 2013.
The workshop theme is ABOVE-BELOW / DESSUS-DESSOUS, and the project is a conceptual design for an integrated light-water-music–spatial installation in and around the Wits swimming pool for the 2014 WALE festival.

Chia-Tsai’s main works are light and sound installations with the water. She begins her career as an electronics technology engineer before graduating from the French National Art School of Paris-Cergy in 2003. She subsequently exhibits in various galleries and cultural institutions in France and abroad.

Her works probe us to take a new look at usual and natural phenomena such as rain, water and steam. Her talent is to transform spaces, making them mysterious, oneiric and contemplative referring us to our deepest selves.
