"Bridges": a photographic exhibition to explore religious practices opens in Durban

"Bridges" is the first-time joint exhibition of the work of two photographers at places of worship. One is from Reunion Island (René-Paul Savignan) and the other is South African (Andrew Tshabangu, followed by the Gallery MOMO in Johannesburg). Their project is original, because it emanates from no particular order but of a common will to discover faiths and the links of which they guess. "Bridges" comprises eighty black and white photographs selected from thousands of images captured over 15 years. Together they explore and document that most fundamental of human needs: the expression of spiritual longing through communal ritual.

The approach is determinedly subjective and artistic. Two photographic glances, of the South, cross to allow through the image the discovery of daily and intimate practices of men and women who live on these territories of Africa and the Indian Ocean. It is about a photography that attempts to tell stories about human being life, without making it in a didactic or educational way. At the same time documentary and intimate it reports through this project the diversity and the wealth of the religious practices. It gives to feel the spirituality and the questions that accompany it, the fervour of these faiths and these rites that are renewed again and again at the dawn of the 21th century.

"Bridges": an exhibition part of the French-South Africa seasons 2012&2013 - Durban Art Gallery - From 4 November 2012 to 18 January 2013
