"French Connections": an exhibition of French masterpieces at the Johannesburg Art Gallery

An exceptional exhibition of French classics from the collection of the Johannesburg Art Gallery will be shown at the JAG from 28 October 2012 to 10 March 2013. Aiming to investigate a very specific time and place in a developmental era in European history, the exhibition looks at the precursors of Impressionism, Impressionism, Post-Impressionism and other alternate methods of visual expression from 1830 to the 20th century. Included are the works of such masters as Delacroix, Boudin, Courbet, the Barbizon School, Manet, Daumier, alongside Impressionists painters like Sisley and, of course, Monet.

Auguste Rodin's famous sculpture of Miss Fairfax will also be on display, as well as an exquisite collection of artworks by the Post–Impressionist artist Toulouse-Lautrec and 13 pieces by Pablo Picasso. Finally, a special area will be dedicated to South-African born artist Gérard Sekoto, who went into exile in France in 1947. This unique opportunity to see such historically significant parts of the JAG collections is organised as part of the France-South Africa Seasons 2012&2013.
