David Pearce is Director of the Rock Art Research Institute, University of the Witwatersrand. His broad research interest is in cognitive archaeology, particularly in the southern African Later Stone Age. In more specific terms, this interest translates into his research on Later Stone Age rock art, mostly in the Eastern Cape Province, and his study of Later Stone Age burial practices along the southern coast of South Africa.
Since 2010 he has been leading a major project to determine the composition of paints in southern African rock art and to directly date them. He has published numerous scholarly articles about religious and social aspects of hunter-gatherer rock art as well as chronology.
