Book launch – Visionary Animal. Rock Art from Southern Africa
Why were depictions of animals a crucial trigger for the birth of art? And why did animals dominate that art for so long? In order to answer these questions, Renaud Ego examined some of the world’s finest rock art, that of the San of southern Africa.
Visionary Animal is the English translation of L’Animal voyant, published in France in 2015 (Actes Sud). It is a rich collection of essays on San rock art from across southern Africa. The book is also a photo essay beautifully illustrated with more than 140 photos taken by the author, Renaud Ego, during his field research in Botswana, Namibia, South Africa and Zimbabwe.
During the second fornight of March 2019, the author will visit South Africa and Lesotho to showcase his book. Join him for the following dates:
The book was published thanks to a partnership between Wits University Press and IFAS-Recherche.
