Social scientists’ views on Covid-19 in Southern Africa (14)
A number of pandemics and epidemics have afflicted the African continent for centuries. Health historians have researched these issues belonging to the field of social and economic history. We have selected two papers focusing on the history of the plague in West Africa from the fourteenth to the nineteenth century and on the Spanish flu in 1918 South Africa. They help to put the current pandemic into perspective, both in its effects on societies and in the responses that have been given to them.
Divers pandémies et épidémies ont touché le continent africain depuis des siècles et les historiens de la santé ont travaillé sur ces questions, qui relèvent de l’histoire sociale et économique. Nous vous proposons ici deux liens vers des travaux consacrés à la peste en Afrique de l’Ouest du XIVe au XIXe siècle et à la grippe espagnole en Afrique du Sud in 1918. Ils permettent de mettre en perspective la pandémie actuelle, à la fois dans ses effets sur les sociétés et dans les réponses qui leur ont été apportées.
