About us

L’IFAS-Recherche a été créé en 1995 par le ministère français des Affaires étrangères et le Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS) pour répondre à la volonté de la France de participer à la construction de la nouvelle Afrique du Sud en y développant des recherches dans le domaine des sciences humaines et sociales. Aujourd’hui, son mandat régional ne se limite pas à la République sud-africaine, mais couvre également onze autres pays d’Afrique australe et centrale (Angola, Botswana, Eswatini, Congo, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibie, République démocratique du Congo, Zambie et Zimbabwe).

Depuis sa création, l’Institut a développé trois grands domaines d’expertise :

— axe 1 : archéologie, paléoanthropologie, préhistoire ;

— axe 2 : histoire, histoire de l’art, patrimoine ;

— axe 3 : dynamiques contemporaines.

Sa mission — en tant qu’Unité mixte des instituts français de recherche à l’étranger (UMIFRE) — est d’encourager des recherches scientifiques (collectives ou individuelles) par le biais d’appels à projets annuels. L’IFAS-Recherche soutient ainsi une trentaine de spécialistes de l’Afrique, issus de différentes disciplines (histoire, géographie, anthropologie, archéologie, sciences politiques, etc.). Il aide également les chercheurs européens et africains à réaliser des travaux de terrain, à organiser des événements scientifiques (colloques, journées d’étude, séminaires, etc.) et à diffuser leurs résultats (aide à la publication, courts métrages, etc.).

L’IFAS-Recherche fait également partie du réseau du GIS (Groupement d’intérêt scientifique) « Études africaines en France ».

IFAS-Research was founded in 1995 by the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the French National Research Centre (Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique — CNRS) to answer France’s wish to take part in the construction of the new South Africa, by developing research in the field of human and social sciences. Nowadays, its regional mandate is not limited to the South African Republic, but also covers eleven other countries in southern and central Africa (South Africa, Angola, Botswana, Eswatini, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, Republic of the Congo, Zambia and Zimbabwe).

Since its inception, the Institute has developed 3 main domains of expertise:

— area 1: archaeology, palaeoanthropology, prehistory;

— area 2: history, history of art, heritage;

— area 3: contemporary dynamics.

Its mission —as a French Research Centre (UMIFRE, Unité mixte des instituts français de recherche à l’étranger)— is to encourage and subsidise scientific projects (collective or individual) through annual calls for proposals. IFAS-Research thus supports over thirty senior and junior specialists on Africa from various disciplines (history, geography, anthropology, archaeology, political science, etc.). It also assists European and African researchers to carry out fieldwork, organise scientific events (conferences, seminars, etc.) and disseminate their results (publication support, short films, etc.).

IFAS-Research is also part of the academic network Groupement d’Intérêt Scientifique des études africaines en France (GIS).
