It can be argued that the present situation, as far as the population\u2019s well being is concerned, belittles the political turmoil around the independences or political liberations, at least in countries which were not devastated by wars: in all countries except South Africa, it questions the very survival of a significant number of the population as both rural and urban communities are affected; these communities will never be the same afterwards, even if they manage to overcome the onslaught of the crisis.<\/p>\n<p>By opening this volume to development practitioners \u2013 most contributors belong to development NGOs operating in the sub-region \u2013 the authors ensured that the approach would remain practical and nurtured by experience.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Michel Lafon &amp; Scott Drimie,2003,<strong>Food Security in Southern Africa.
