The authors content that creativity in collecting and producing empirical materials is crucial; it requires a methodological detour as a way to avoid endangering researchers.

The five articles illustrate different ways to implement such a methodological detour, and demonstrate how heuristic this approach is in understanding violent phenomena. Rémi Korman writes about the controversy that surrounded the responsibility of the Catholic Church in the genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda, drawing from a large body of press articles. Through notebooks he managed to get access to as well as to process and archive, Michel Cahen sheds light on the day-to-day activities of the Renamo during the Mozambican civil war. Léo Fortailler grounds his analysis upon a worksheet, used by one of his informants during educational sensitization activities in Cape Town’s townships. He thus illustrates the complexities of the current anti-xenophobic campaigns in South Africa. Ini Dele-Adedeji scrutinizes the dynamics of Boko Haram, using materials he produced during his fieldwork in north-eastern Nigeria. Doing so, he contributes to filling the void of first-hand data on the jihadist group – one that is a by-product of the repression tactics used against it by the Nigerian State and army. Finally, the team members of the Nigeria Watch project—a project that collects and compiles data on violent deaths in Nigeria since 2006—discuss the benefits and limits of quantitative methods in analysing violent phenomena.

The issue closes with the “Inside the Digital Archives Studio” section that presents an interview with historians and archivists involved in the valorization of the archives of Kayes in Mali: they all recall the fire that destroyed the archives in May 2020 and discuss the necessary protection of archival centers in the continent.

Two special issues, one on Environmental Knowledge (2022) and the other on “Photographing the African Social Worlds: Production and Circulation of Visual Representations” (2023) are underway.
