Led by Elena Vezzadini (Institut des mondes africains), it examines the history of working-class urban women professionals in four African countries – Ghana, Sudan, Ethiopia and Tanzania – chosen for their comparative potential, throughout fifty crucial years, from the end of the First World War to the transition to one-party governments in the 1960s. According to the existing literature on work in Africa, while the colonial states generally employed men, women worked in a plethora of self-employed and unwaged professions, outside the colonial gaze. This project highlights the impact of the profession on the lives of unprivileged urban women, and what work meant to them.

The partnership between IFAS-Recherche and WomAtWork will enable the funding of work grants through a call for projects aimed at students and young researchers working in one of the countries covered by the UMIFRE’s mandate. The 2024 call for proposals can be found here.

L’IFAS-Recherche lance en 2024 un nouveau partenariat avec le projet WomAtWork.
