class="wp-block-paragraph">
On 18 February 2025, IFAS-Research hosted the seminar “Creation as Research, Research as Creation”, organised by Pauline Guinard (Associate Professor in Geography at ENS-Paris and visiting researcher at IFAS-Research in February 2025) and Annael Le Poullennec (Director of IFAS-Research).

The seminar aimed to reflect on the use of creative practices in academic research and the debates they generate, particularly in South Africa where such approaches are increasingly employed. The idea for the event emerged in the context of the forthcoming publication of Looking For and Learning From Public Spaces in African Cities, coordinated by Emilie Guitard (CNRS), Ismael Maazaz (Tempere University) and Pauline Guinard (ENS Paris), in our Africae Studies collection. The book invites reflection on the notion of public spaces in African cities (Johannesburg, Cape Town, Lagos, Ibadan, Dakar, Kinshasa and N’Djamena) through the work of both artists and academics from the Global North and South.

The 18 February seminar provided an opportunity for participants to explore the intersections between research and creation, and to consider how best to name and frame these practices (“research-creation”, creation-as-research”, “creative research”, etc.). More specifically, discussions were centered around the following questions:

What do creative practices and methodologies contribute to academic research — to a specific research project, a discipline, a research field, or a central question?

Why do artists turn to research and researchers — and vice versa?

How do creative and academic methodologies combine, alternate or converge in specific projects?

What possibilities do these intersections open up? What challenges or limitations arise?

To engage with these issues, the programme was structured around several key moments:

A presentation and discussion of the book Looking For and Learning From Public Spaces in African Cities and discussions;

Two roundtables on the themes of “Public spaces and urban production” and “Memory, archives and ‘ghosts'”;

A screening of the documentary Trouble Sleep by Alain Kasanda (2020, 41 minutes).

The richness of the discussions — followed by 65 participants, about half of whom were students — suggests strong interest and engagement. This momentum encourages us to continue the project in the form of thematic workshops, in Johannesburg and beyond.
