Panels of the Beyond Binaries Project at the South African Sociological Association Annual Conference

Du 6 au 9 juillet 2026, l’IFAS-Recherche et l’IRD en Afrique australe ont participé au congrès annuel de la South African Sociological Association (SASA), organisé à l’Université du Witwatersrand autour du thème Solidarity: Possibilities and Pitfalls. Porté conjointement par la School of Social Sciences de l’Université du Witwatersrand, l’IRD et l’IFAS-Recherche, le projet Beyond Binaries vise à repenser les rapports Sud-Nord dans la production des savoirs. Dans ce cadre, les onze doctorantes et doctorants des universités de Johannesburg, Pretoria et du Witwatersrand, soutenus financièrement par l’IFAS-Recherche et l’IRD, ainsi qu’une vingtaine de chercheurs issus des sciences sociales, ont présenté, au sein de huit panels, des communications proposant un retour réflexif sur leurs terrains d’enquête. Les présentations ont abordé des thématiques variées, telles que les migrations, les restitutions foncières post-apartheid, les archives coloniales, les usages des plateformes numériques ou encore les mobilités et les frontières. Les communications présentées lors de ces panels feront l’objet d’un numéro Varia de la revue Lesedi, à paraître en 2027. 

On July 6–9, 2026, IFAS-Research and IRD in Southern Africa took part in the annual conference of the South African Sociological Association (SASA), hosted by the University of the Witwatersrand under the theme Solidarity: Possibilities and Pitfalls. Jointly led by the Wits School of Social Sciences, IRD and IFAS-Research, the Beyond Binaries project seeks to rethink South-North relations in knowledge production. As part of the project, eleven PhD candidates from the Universities of Johannesburg, Pretoria and the Witwatersrand, supported by IFAS-Research and the IRD, together with twenty social sciences researchers, presented papers across eight panels offering reflexive accounts of their fieldwork. Their presentations addressed a wide range of topics, including migration, post-apartheid land restitution, colonial archives, digital platforms, and mobility and borders. The papers presented during these panels will be published in a special Varia issue of Lesedi in 2027.
