Lesedi, the online journal of IFAS-Recherche, celebrates its 15th anniversary with a special issue of 64 pages on prehistory and the cultural evolution of Homo sapiens, or “modern humans”, from the Middle to Later Stone Age in Southern Africa. It contains 13 articles written by senior researchers, post-doctoral researchers and Ph.D. students, presenting ongoing research, new fieldworks and collaborative projects in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Botswana.

The special issue, coordinated by Guillaume Porraz (CNRS, ArScAn-AnTET) and Aurore Val (University of Tübingen, ESI), with Thomas Vernet-Habasque, highlights the extent of current research, from lithic technology to archeobotany, anthracology, archeozoology, geoarchaeology, or ancient DNA study, as well as rock art studies. The programmes Bushman Rock Shelter / Heuningneskrans (Limpopo Province) and Matobart Rock Art & Stone Age Project (Matopos, Zimbabwe), supported by IFAS-Recherche over the years, are the core of the issue, along with other fieldworks.

In another field, anthropologist Federica Toldo (associate researcher, LESC) presents her work on funerary rituals called xinguilamento in present-day Luanda.
