“Looking Together” is an international workshop in Visual History and Theory (16-17 October 2026). It explores an approach to visual archives, migration histories and imperial afterlives developed by media anthropologist Zeynep Gürsel. Looking together, for instance at unknown or forgotten portraits of ancestors, stirs recollection and elicits testimony, bringing plural gazes into a shared space. The workshop invites participants to question the singular “gaze”, to move beyond sight towards touch, hearing and other multi-sensory ways of apprehending images, and to rethink the boundaries between the human and more-than-human, between different scales of time, and between disciplines.
It brings together researchers, artists and archivists around photographs and related archives (letters, memoirs, family stories) from African collections and archives of migration. The programme puts the Bouba Touré collections (Paris) in conversation with the Mayibuye Archive and several photo studios in Cape Town, alongside what participants bring, at a time of heightened xenophobic tension in South Africa. IFAS-Research is delighted to be a partner of this event.
