December 09-11, 2024

Botswana National Museum, Maun

As part of the “Homini’Karst” Joint Research Programme (2023-2026), Laurent Bruxelles (CNRS – UMR 5608 TRACES) and the Botswana National Museum organised an international conference on palaeosciences in Botswana, entitled “Modalities of the Homo-Genus Appearance in Southern Africa Paleokarsts”. The event gathered around 50 geomorphologists, archaeologists, plaeontologists, plaeoanthropologists from Botswana, South Africa, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Mozambique and France, as well as officials from Botswana.

The conference aimed to present ongoing research projects on the emergence of the Homo genus, especially those documented in karst environments in southern and eastern Africa, as well as to highlight the specificities of the Botswana context and to strengthen the regional interdisciplinary research network.

This event will be followed by a second international conference in 2026 in Gaborone, and the papers will be published as part of a collective volume.
