Pauline Guinard, maître de conférences HDR en géographie à l’École normale supérieure (ENS-Paris), se rendra à l’IFAS-Recherche en février en tant que chercheuse invitée. À cette occasion, et à celle de la parution prochaine du livre Looking For and Learning From Public Spaces in African Cities, coordonné par Émilie Guitard (CNRS), Ismael Maazaz (Université de Tempere, Finlande) et Pauline Guinard (ENS Paris), dans notre collection Africae Studies, Pauline Guinard et Annael Le Poullennec, directrice de l’IFAS-Recherche, organisent un séminaire le 18 février prochain, intitulé “Creation as Research, Research as Creation”, qui explorera les méthodes, enjeux et défis des pratiques créatives au sein de la recherche universitaire.

À partir des discussions entre artistes et chercheur·ses engagées dans le livre, l’événement sera l’occasion de réfléchir aux relations entre la recherche et la création, qu’elles soient appelées “recherche-création”, “création-comme-recherche”, “recherche-créative”, etc. Les discussions de la journée seront guidées par les questions suivantes :

  • Qu’apportent les pratiques et méthodologies créatives à la recherche universitaire, à un projet de recherche précis, à une discipline, à un champ ou une question de recherche ?
  • Pourquoi les artistes se tournent-il·elles vers la recherche et les chercheur·ses ?
  • Comment les méthodologies créatives et universitaires se combinent-elles, se complètent-elles et convergent-elles pour des projets spécifiques ? Qu’est-ce que cela ouvre en termes de perspectives et quelles en sont les limites et difficultés ?
  • Quels termes sont privilégiés et pourquoi ?

Pour en discuter, la conversation sera organisée autour de la présentation du livre, de deux tables rondes, « Espaces publics et production urbaine » et « Mémoire, archives et ‘fantômes’ », ainsi que d’une projection de film.

10h – 11h : Présentation du livre Looking For and Learning From Public Spaces in African Cities par Pauline Guinard et discussion.

11h – 12h30 : Table-ronde “Espaces publics et production urbaine”, centrée sur Johannesburg.

12h30 – 14h : Déjeuner.

14h – 15h30 : Table-ronde “Mémoire, archives et ‘fantômes'”.
Modératrice : Annael Le Poullennec.
Participant·es : Nondumiso Msimanga (Université de Johannesburg), Warren Nebe et Sibongile Bhebhe (Drama for Life, Université du Witwatersrand), Bronwyn Lace (Centre for the Less Good Idea) et Anna Seiderer (Université Paris 8).

15h30 – 16h30 : Projection de Trouble Sleep, film d’Alain Kassanda (2020, 41 minutes).

Chacune de ces discussions sera abordée par le prisme de la recherche-création.

Pauline Guinard, Associate Professor in Geography at École normale supérieure (ENS-Paris) is coming to IFAS-Research as visiting researcher in February. On the occasion of the upcoming publication of the book Looking For and Learning From Public Spaces in African Cities, coordinated by Emilie Guitard (CNRS), Ismael Maazaz (Tempere University, Finland) and Pauline Guinard (ENS Paris), in our Africae Studies collection, Pauline Guinard and Annael Le Poullennec, director of IFAS-Research, are organising a seminar on February 18th titled “Creation as Research, Research as Creation”, to reflect on the methods, possibilities, and challenges of the use of creative practices in academic research. 

Taking artists-researchers discussions in the book as a starting point, we will take the opportunity to reflect on the relations between research and creation, be it labelled arts-based-research, creation-as-research, creative-research, etc. Guiding questions for the day are:

  • What do creative practices and methodologies bring to academic research, to a specific research project, to a discipline, to a research field or question?
  • Why do artists turn to research and researchers? How do creative and academic methodologies combine, alternate, converge for specific projects?
  • What possibilities are opened? What limitations/difficulties encountered?
  • What terms are preferred and why?

To discuss this, we will organize our conversation around the book presentation, two roundtables, “Public spaces and urban production” and “Memory, archives and ‘ghosts’” and a film screening.

11:00am – 12:30pm: Roundtable “Public spaces and urban production”, focused on Johannesburg.

Each of these discussions will be approached through the lens of practise-led or creative research.
