Join us for “Grounds of Change: Recognising South Africa’s Reclaimers,” a special exhibition and discussion at the Alliance Française de Pretoria on Saturday, 20 September, from 10h00 to 12h30. This event, organised by Alliance Française Pretoria, in partnership with IFAS and IFAS-Research, brings to light the essential work of South Africa’s reclaimers, individuals who play a critical, yet often unseen, role in the country’s recycling economy.
Exhibition
As part of the Reclaiming Waste project (2019-2022), photographer Mark Lewis documented the daily lives and vital contributions of these workers, offering a visual narrative that challenges preconceived notions about waste and those who manage it. The photographs serve as a testament to the resilience and dedication of reclaimers, highlighting their impact on both environmental sustainability and urban livelihoods.
Discussion
Engage in a thought-provoking panel discussion with leading experts and advocates. The discussion features:
- Prof. Melanie Samson (University of Johannesburg): A scholar whose research focuses on the intersection of urban governance, social justice, and waste management.
- Sifiso Gumbi (Urban Surfers): Representing an organization that champions the rights and recognition of informal waste workers.
- Luyanda Hlatshwayo (African Reclaimers Organisation): A prominent voice from a reclaimer-led organization, sharing firsthand insights and advocating for policy changes.
- Chamuwari Ketano (Buy Back Centre Association of South Africa): an environmental management and business development professional involved in South Africa’s waste management and recycling sector.
- Mark Lewis (Photographer): photographer and documentary filmmaker who has collaborated with the African Reclaimers Organisation (ARO) to raise awareness about reclaimers.
The speakers will delve into the challenges and opportunities facing reclaimers, discussing topics such as formalisation, income generation, and the broader social and economic implications of their work.
