L’exposition “Places in Me – The voices of Platfontein’s youth” est le fruit de la collaboration entre le projet de recherche international COSMO-ART dont l’IFAS-Recherche est partenaire, deux associations basées à Platfontein, Southern African San Development Organisation (SASDO) et San Community Development (SANCD),et l’Université Sol Plaatje. Le projet a reçu le soutien logistique et financier de l’IFAS-Research, l’IFAS-Culture, du musée McGregor, et de l’Origins Centre (Université du Witwatersrand).

Le programme de recherche COSMO-ART s’intéresse aux sites d’art rupestre en Afrique australe et à la question de ce qui constitue le patrimoine, croisant les points de vue des communautés, des institutions en charge du patrimoine, des acteurs privés, des utilisateur·ices et des chercheur·ses. Dans ce cadre, des recherches ont été menées auprès des communautés San vivant à Platfontein, près de Kimberley. L’exposition “Places in Me” découle du désir commun de rassembler et de rendre visibles les perspectives des jeunes de Platfontein sur leur place dans la société sud-africaine, à travers leur vision du lieu où ils vivent. Équipé·es d’appareils photo, ils et elles ont documenté les aspects de leur environnement importants, pertinents et intéressants à leurs yeux. Des interviews réalisées en 2022 ont permis de recueillir leurs points de vue sur leurs photographies. L’exposition propose ainsi un dialogue entre les photos et leur analyse par les neuf jeunes femmes et hommes ayant participé au projet photovoice, transmettant leurs perspectives individuelles – comment ils et elles se perçoivent, se définissent, se relient au monde, et ce à quoi ils et elles aspirent.

Cette exposition a été présentée pour la première fois en 2023 à Platfontein puis à l’Université Sol Plaatje. Pour cette troisième édition, à l’Origins Centre, l’exposition montrera :

  • Les photographies et extraits des entretiens des participant·es au photovoice ;
  • Vingt objets traditionnels, sélectionnés par les associations partenaires, accompagnés de films explicatifs, qui parleront à la fois de la tradition et de la modernité ;
  • Un court documentaire à propos des collaborations développées entre les communautés et les chercheur·ses ;
  • Un livret d’exposition dans lequel des QR codes permettront d’accéder à la lecture des textes de l’exposition en !Xuntali et Khwedam.

L’événement d’ouverture sera structuré autour de présentations et de performances, toutes traduites en !Xuntali et Khwedam. À cette occasion, un groupe de 22 personnes de Platfontein se rendra à Johannesburg pour assister à l’ouverture, parmis lesquelles des représentant·es des deux associations partenaires (SANCD et SASDO), des participant·es au projet photovoice, ainsi que des danseur·ses et chanteur·ses de hip-hop.

Programme :

14h00-14h30 – Présentation du projet de recherche COSMO-ART et des participant·es, expliquant le contenu de l’exposition.

14h30-15h30 – Table ronde avec les participant·es du projet photovoice, autour du processus du photovoice et les enjeux qui ont été soulevés.

15h30-16h00 – Pause.

16h00-17h30 – Discours inauguraux et spectacles de danses traditionnelles et de hip hop par des artistes de Platfontein.

17h30 – 18h00 – Visite de l’exposition.

18h00 – Buffet.

The exhibition “Places in Me – The voices of Platfontein’s youth” is the result of a collaboration between an international research team, COSMO-ART which IFAS-Research is a partner of, two Platfontein-based associations, the Southern African San Development Organisation (SASDO) and San Community Development (SANCD) and various departments of Sol Plaatje University. Logistically and financially, this project was supported by IFAS-Research, IFAS-Culture, McGregor Museum and Origins Centre (University of the Witwatersrand).

The COSMO-ART research project is looking at rock art sites in southern Africa and the question of what constitutes heritage, by bringing together the points of view of communities, heritage institutions, private stakeholders, users, researchers. As part of this project, research was carried out with the San communities living in Platfontein, near Kimberley. The “Places in Me” exhibition project comes from a common desire to gather and make visible the perspectives of young people in Platfontein on their place in South African society, through their viewpoint on the place where they live. Equipped with cameras, they documented aspects of their environment that they considered important, relevant and interesting. Interviews conducted in 2022 collected the authors’ points of view on their pictures. The exhibition therefore proposes a dialogue between photos and their analysis by the nine young women and men who took part in the photovoice project, conveying their individual perspectives – how they see themselves, how they define and relate to the world, and what they aspire to.

This exhibition was first shown in 2023 in Platfontein and then at Sol Plaatje University. For this third edition, at the Origins Centre, the exhibition has been expanded to include:

  • Photographies and abstracts from the photo-voice interviews;
  • Twenty traditional objects, selected by the partner associations, accompanied by explanatory films, to speak of both tradition and modernity;
  • A short documentary film explaining the collaborations developed between communities and researchers;
  • A booklet in which the voices can be read and heard trough a QR code system both in !Xuntali and Khwedam.

The opening event will be structured around talks and performances, all translated into !Xuntali and Khwedam. For the occasion, a group of 22 people from Platfontein will travel to Johannesburg to attend the opening, including representatives of the two partner associations (SANCD and SASDO), participants in the photovoice project, and hip hop dancers and singers.

Programme:

2.00-2.30pm – Presentation of the COSMO-ART research project and collaborators, explaining the content of the exhibition.

2.30-3.30pm – Roundtable with photovoice participants discussing on how the photovoice process was carried out and the issues raised.

3.30-4.00pm – Break.

4.00-5.30pm – Inaugural speeches and traditional dances and hip hop performances by artists from Platfontein.

5.30-6.00pm – Visit of the exhibition.

6.00pm – Buffet.
