L’IFAS-Recherche et l’Origins Centre (Wits University) vous invite à trois jours de séminaire et d’atelier autour des enjeux et des apports de l’archéologie expériementale, organisés par Tammy Hodgskiss, Camille Bourdier et Takunda Welcome Chigwende dans le cadre du projet MATOBART. Cet événement vise à ouvrir un dialogue pluridisciplinaire entre étudiant·es, chercheur·ses et artistes autour de l’utilisation des matières colorantes, des procédés de fabrication de la peinture dans l’art rupestre et des approches expérimentales dans la recherche en archéologie.

Qui peut participer ?

Les organisateur·ices souhaite initier les étudiant·es aux approches expérimentales en archéologie, notamment pour la période du Stone Age et l’art rupestre. Tou·tes les étudiant·es, chercheur·ses, universitaires ou toutes autres personnes intéressées sont les bienvenu·es, mais les places étant limitées, priorité sera données aux étudiant·es à partir du master.

  • 15 octobre, 8h30 pour 9h00 – 15h00, à l’IFAS (Institut Français, 62 Juta Street, Braamfontein) : Présentations et discussions autour des approches expérimentales en archéologie et en particulier en art rupestre.
    • Présentations de Stephen Townley Bassett (artiste), Camille Bourdier (Université Toulouse II Jean Jaurès), Takunda Chigwende (University of the Witwatersrand), Tammy Hodgskiss (Origins Center, University of the Witwatersrand), David Pearce (Rock Art Research Institute, University of the Witwatersrand), Jerome Reynard (University of the Witwatersrand), Viola Schmid (Austrian Archaeological Institute, Austrian Academy of Sciences).

16 et 17 octobre, 9h00 – 16h00, à l’Origins Centre (Wits Archaeology Department, Wits University) : Expérimentations autour de la collecte et de la transformation de l’ocre et de la préparation des pots de peinture.

IFAS-Research and the Origins Center invite you to 3-day conference and workshop on experimental archaeology, rock painting recipes and painting processes, organised by Tammy Hodgskiss, Camille Bourdier and Takunda Welcome Chigwende, as part of the MATOBART project. The workshop aims to allow for the sharing of knowledge on paint making processes, pigment use for rock art, experiential use of pigments, and experimental archaeological research procedures. The workshop will foster scientific and academic understandings with cross-disciplinary links with experiential understanding, the humanities and the arts to create a fuller understanding paint-making processes in the past.

Who can attend?

The workshop aims to introduce students to experimental approaches in archaeology, with emphasis on Stone Age archaeology and rock paintings. All students and academics will be welcome, as well as interested members of the public, but spaces are limited, and preference will be given to postgraduate students.

    Lectures and discussions on experimental approaches in archaeology, focusing on rock art.

  • 16th and 17th October, 9:00am – 4:00pm, at the Origins Centre (Wits Archaeology Department, Wits University): Experiments with ochre collection, ochre processing techniques and paint recipe manufacture.
