Pour deux bourses de Master et une bourse de Doctorat/For two Master’s and one Doctoral scholarship (2022.2)

La Section de français de l’École des langues et des littératures (SLL) de l’Université de Cape Town (UCT), dans le cadre du Programme ‘VC 2030 Future Leaders’, invite des ressortissants sud-africains et africains à postuler pour des bourses d’études dans le domaine des littératures francophones contemporaines sur le Sud (Afrique, océan Indien, Caraïbes…) et le Nord postcolonial.

Dans ce 2e appel de 2022, 2 bourses de Master et 1 bourse de Doctorat sont disponibles, à partir de janvier 2023. Les propositions de recherche doivent être liées aux domaines/sujets suivants des littératures francophones :

– Identités culturelles post-/décoloniales
– Migration et/ou diaspora
– Intersectionnalité
– ‘Afropolitanisme’, ‘Afrotopie’
– Créolisation et/ou hybridité
– Identités spatiales postcoloniales (‘zones de contact’, îles, espaces urbains, ‘écotones’)
– Mémoire post-/décoloniale
– Intertextualité
– Littératures graphiques post-dé/coloniales (bande dessinée)
– Intermédialité (texte-image)
Les propositions d’approches comparatistes (au sein du monde francophone) sont encouragées.

Critères d’admissibilité :

– Qualifications : diplôme de Honours (ou équivalent : Bac+4 avec mémoire) (pour le Master) ou de Master (pour le Doctorat) en littérature française/francophone, ou dans un domaine connexe
– Excellente maîtrise du français à oral et à l’écrit (équivalent aux niveaux C1-C2 du CECR)
– Bonne maîtrise de l’anglais (UCT est un environnement anglophone)
– Domiciliation à Cape Town pour la majeure partie des études
NB : Seuls les candidats qui ont obtenu le diplôme correspondant au plus tôt en 2019 sont éligibles.

Prestations offertes :

– Bourse d’études de 65 000 ZAR pour un an (Master)
– Bourse d’études de 100 000 ZAR pour un an (Doctorat)
– Contribution aux frais de recherche (e.g. achat de livres, participation à des ateliers)
– Opportunités d’enseignement/tutorat rémunéré dans la Section de français de SLL
– Éventuellement : activités rémunérées comme assistant de recherche
NB 1 : Si l’avancement de la recherche est satisfaisant, les étudiants titulaires d’une bourse de Master pourront postuler pour un soutien financier supplémentaire (partiel ou intégral) lors d’un appel ultérieur afin de finaliser leur recherche. Un financement de trois ans maximum peut être envisagé pour le Doctorat.

Les candidats intéressés soumettront les documents suivants (en français) :

– Lettre de motivation
– Curriculum vitae
– Relevés de notes universitaires (Premier cycle/undergraduate + deuxième cycle/postgraduate)
– Proposition de recherche : Master (1-3 pages) ; Doctorat (3-5 pages)
– Lettres de recommandation universitaires : au moins une (Master) ; au moins deux (Doctorat)
– Résumé du mémoire de Honours/maîtrise (Master) et du mémoire de Master (Doctorat). NB. Le mémoire complet sera demandé à un stade ultérieur de la procédure.

Les candidatures doivent être envoyées en un seul document pdf à markus.arnold@uct.ac.za avant le 31 octobre 2022. Les candidatures incomplètes ou reçues hors délai ne seront pas considérées. Les candidats retenus à l’étape de présélection seront interviewés à distance. Les entretiens en ligne sont prévus entre le 10 et le 15 novembre 2022. Les inscriptions à UCT/bourses d’études commenceront dès que possible en 2023.

The French Section of the School of Languages and Literatures (SLL) of the University of Cape Town (UCT), within the framework of the VC 2030 Future Leaders Programme, invites applications from South African and African nationals for scholarships in the field of contemporary Francophone literatures about the Global South (Africa, Indian Ocean, Caribbean…) and the postcolonial North.

In this second 2022 call, 2 Master’s scholarship and 1 Doctoral scholarship are available, as from January 2023. Research proposals should be related to the following broad fields/topics within Francophone literatures:

– Post/Decolonial cultural identities
– Migration and/or Diaspora
– Intersectionality
– ‘Afropolitanism’, ‘Afrotopia’
– Creolisation and/or Hybridity
– Postcolonial spatial identities (‘contact zones’, islands, urban spaces, ‘ecotones’)
– Post/Decolonial memory
– Intertextuality
– Post/Decolonial graphic literatures (bande dessinée)
– (Text-image) Intermediality
Comparative approaches (within the Francophone world) are particularly welcome.

Requirements:

– Qualifications: An Honours (or equivalent: e.g. Master 1, Maîtrise with a research essay) degree (for the Master’s) or a Master’s degree (for the PhD) in French/Francophone literature or a related field
– High proficiency in spoken and written French (equivalent to C1-C2 levels of the CEFR)
– English language skills (UCT is an English-speaking environment)
– Residence in / relocation to Cape Town for the major part of the studies
NB: Only applicants who were awarded the relevant degree no earlier than 2019 are eligible.

Benefits:

– Scholarship of 65 000 ZAR for one year (Masters)
– Scholarship of 100 000 ZAR for one year (PhD)
– Contribution to research cost (e.g. book purchases, workshop participation), at the discretion of the supervisor
– Remunerated teaching/tutoring opportunities in the French section of SLL
– Possibly: remunerated research assistant opportunities
NB 1: Upon successful advancement of the research, students holding a Master’s scholarship may apply for additional (partial) financial support during a subsequent call in order to finalise their research. A maximum of three years of funding may be envisaged for the doctoral degree.

– Academic transcripts
– Research proposal: Master’s (1-3 pages); PhD (3-5 pages)
– Academic reference letters: minimum of 1 (for MA candidates); minimum of 2 (for PhD candidates)
– Summary of Honours/Master 1 research essay (for MA candidates) and Master’s dissertation (for PhD candidates). NB. The full dissertation will be requested at a later stage of the process.

Applications should be sent in one single pdf document to markus.arnold@uct.ac.za by the 31st of October 2022. Incomplete and late applications will not be considered. Successful candidates will be shortlisted and given a date for an online interview. Interviews are planned to take place between the 10th and the 15th of November 2022. Enrolment at UCT/Scholarships will start as soon as possible in 2023.
